Here it is the river of Yao, one of the three crossing rivers in the city of Ningbo. Along this Yao River, I rode a bicycle and took photos of the Custom Office, the river banks and the bridges. From the old original means of west gate to the north gate, I walked around the Yongfeng Gate Heritage Park and the Hua Mei hospital and history museum to record the story about this part of Ningbo.
The old residences of Ningbo like to live along the Yongfeng Road, Wangjing Road and Changchun Road, all along the Yao River. I rode from the start of Yongfeng Gate on the Yongfeng Road to the start of Changchun Road, the stop go West Gate, through the middle part of Wangjing Road.
The mud digger boat works in the river and a few boat carries the sludge out. Ningbo is doing the “water cleaning” job as a project for a few years now.
The stories comes from the two sculptures located on the Yongfeng Gate Heritage Park.
A squared shaped old Ningbo city was mapped out on the floor. On one side, the workshop of knowledge comes from the story of a scholar was invited into the Ningbo city through the Yongfeng Gate. Another sculpture on the right tells the story of the third manager of Hua Mei hospital, who donated almost whole life to the hospital and died in Ningbo. His bodied were carried along the Yao River with band music and sadness of people and he was buried in the northern part of Ningbo in a foreigner’s grave area.
For the Hua Fei Hospital, it has a long story started 170 year ago when a Christian missionary built up a clinic for local people.
Here I would like to attach a picture for you to study.
S.P. Barchet is the person I was talking about. It is under the donation of American Christian, Mr. Barchet, the local rich man’s help, the new Hua Mei hospital was rebuilt using the old bricks of the Yongfeng Gate.
The following photos records the river, the custom office, the Hua Mei hospital history museum and the Yongfeng Gate Heritage Park.
