Food in local

It is a remote city along the east coast of Ningbo city in China, the place Jiang Jie-shi was born and became the president of the national party of republic china before fleeing to Taiwan in 1949.

Fenghua became an eco-village model in China a few years ago for its environmental village management, for it it costs ¥80 a ticket to visit.

The local food is famous for its chunky and large taro.  Small taro seeds near the big trunky one taste very silky, that is the big difference.  We like to cook it with pickled veggie called Xucai.  I like to eat the tender tube fiber near the trunk as well.

As there is a mountain called Xuedou Hill in Fenghua, the creeks produce lots of tasty wild food, such as clams, fishes…

Local market provides the fresh cattle cuts which is a tradition and is well known for local delicacy, such as beef noodle…

This season’s bamboo is tender and it is of thin, long type,  called “whip bamboo” or “thunder bamboo”.  The tube veggie could be grown in the water.   As it has huge amount of iron, it produces blood red liquid…The rice cake is chewy, stir fried with a special veggie called Jicai, which gives great flavor and aroma.

Those are farmer cooked food, may not look awesome, but it does taste fine.

Country life

In China, life is alway about harmony.   Flaming cockscomb with luxurious looking floccus shows the passion of life.  In the courtyard or front yard, cockscomb grows in the vase.  If vastly grown, it could grow very tall, alike the sunflower.

Chinese love orchid more than any other plants for indoor decoration.  Yellow clay and sand mix is good for growing orchid.  I went to the Jiufeng hill to pick some earth and sand.  Normally local orchid blooms in February.  Yellow clay and sad mix could resist the cold rot in the snow.

Bottle gourd is a blessing for house.  Engraved with blessing words, it was used for decoration and to dispel evils.

Golden fish means good luck.  River turtle is kid’s favorate.

Bamboo plant is common in the southern province.

Tea tree flower or camellia is good to be seen in Oct.

Winter melon grows in the frost season.  Pumpkin was harvested to feed the running chicken.

This is a peach plantation. In March, peach flowers would be overwhelming.

Lucky air

Here it is another budget air company called luckyair.  It does the flight in the Yunnan province of China.  Allianced with Westair, there is another 10% discount for connecting flights.

While Westair is based in Chongqin, the flight from Chongqin to Kunming is provided by Westair, the connecting flight goes to Shangarila, Tengchong and Lugu Lake.

The flight from Chongqin to Wulumuqi is another popular destination for connecting flights to Keshi, Hetian and Yining.

The flight from Chongqin to Xishuangbanna, then Dali or Lijiang are even more popular for travelers in Yunnan province.

Great places to go if you could spend a month for cool summer time in Tengchong, a week stay for water festival in the rainforest of Xishuangbanna in March,  winter days in Dali for tea tree flowers, spring in Lugu Lake, autumn in Shangarila for golden and red leaves, winter snow fun and evening happy time in Lijiang…

From Wulumuqi, you can take a train to Lasha, Tibet.

Hetian is a place in Xinjiang where the famous Hetian jade was found.  Happy time in Xinjiang could be very much enjoyed by singing and dancing.

Keshi is close to the border of Pakistan for bike trip to Himalaya.  You can walk the highway, go to the desert, sing what you wan to sing on the way.

Yining is a a place to see lavender farm.

I am the person who gonna enjoy much these routes.

Corridor bridge in China

I went to a town called Wuyi in the mid of Jin Huang and Li Shui area.  I was very much impressed by the corridor bridge in the town centre, which is 120 meters in length, supported by the cement column construction after the original wood base was crushed after a flood of a few years ago.

I was interested to observe the people in the corridor.  Old farmer sells ginger. Elderly people plays music.  A drama stage plaza was located not far from the bridge.  A few merchants sell small items with their booths.  Evening time was great fun for local people.

With red lanterns on, the corridor becomes a place of entrainment.

Wu drama is the local show.

On a rainy day, the bridge becomes even more peaceful. The front plaza has a sculpture of “boy on buffalo”.  The boy is blowing a flute.  The father walks along with a plough carrying on his shoulder and a cooking pot in his hand.

The flaky pastry is well known in th Jinhua area.  Pork and dried vegetable are stuffed for flavour.  Mei Gan Cai is the name for dried veggie.  I enjoyed eating this savoury pastry in the corridor bridge, sitting on the connected stool between the wood column.  The pastry was roasted in a slow burning clay oven.

The neibouring small town Xue Ping produces good quality lotus seeds.

Fried glutinous pudding is popular snack food which was prepared on an iron oven, with dark sugar, sesame filling in the pocket.

Wonton is easy made by wrappings at home.  The wrapping style is done by fold-in using a chopstick.

The boiled wonton soup shall have a spoon of lard, dry shrimps, dry sea weed, pickle and spring onion mixed in.

Simple food, simple life, good connections between people are great in this ancient place.  Street food is easy to find out.  Healthy life style is created by exercising in group in the park, sitting next to each other in corridor.  The intimacy is hard to find in big cities.

The Grand Canal of China

I lived in Hangzhou for three years from 1995-1997.  The HK return year was 1997. I was sitting before a lighted box photo exhibition of HK, wearing a long skirt, with shoulder length hair, it was summer time.  The light box was produced at our studio. The photos were token by my boss of that photo studio. I was enjoying taking retired elders out for lotus photos, giving them instructions, supervising for photo print quality.  We had photographic classes for universities and studio owners. I think we did great job in photographic services.  I met a few good local photographers.

Hangzhou has a post card of West Lake, a legionary story of “White snake” and “Duan Qiao”, a bridge where the white snake was fed by a young boy Xu Xian and she took great appreciation to marry him, a story well described by literature and movies.

With the hosting of G20 in Hangzhou this year, Hangzhou becomes even more well known for foreigners.  Spring cherry flowers, summer turnips, mountains and historical sites, rest tea houses for “Long Jin” tea and “Hu Pao” spring, “Lin Yin” temple, with these charming places, Hangzhou is a place to enjoy life.

A few days ago, I met my old classmates in Hangzhou. We had a walk along the “Gong Zheng” bridge of the site of Grand Canal of China.  The old factories around the river area were renovated and changed into handcraft exhibition centres such as hand fans, scissors.

The riverside has ferries for traveling.  Old boats transport sand.

Local people enjoy the view from the corridor, a cool place to spend time and meet with locals.  Tea houses along the river are also popular for meetups.

Pavilion and under tree seats are other resting places to go over the bridge.  A huge sweet-scented osmantus tree still has some flowers.

A stone statue stands at the end of walking ways to the bridge.

Finally, let us take a a final look of the bridge.

Qu Zhou

Qu Zhou, an acient city connecting to four provinces, with more than 1800 years’ history as a southern cultural city, it remains as a vibrant place for great food experience and cultural immersion.

Firstly the Quzhou Museum,  where you can find the exhibition of 6000 years’ relics.  At the front gate, a monk was sitting still.

An ancient town in Jiangshan, called Nianbadu, is a village with nine dialects, famous for folk song and building artefact.

Secondly, the Southern Confucious Templ, a great place to buy confucious books.

Thirdly, the Jiang Lang Mountain and Xuv Lake.

Jiang Lang Mountain is known for three single hills on cliff.  Its vegetations of bamboo and fern are great to see.

Qu River runs through the city to the town of Long You.

An acient temple overlooks the Qu river.

Colorful carp is from a local company.

Longyou Grotto has a fish-tail design to take more weight.  Drilled by hand more than 2000 years ago, it was a miracle.

White pagoda, originally used for keeping buddist relics located near another river in Longyou.

Tai Bai Mountain

Our local forest botanic garden is a 2 hours’ climb to the top of Mount Taibai, the highest hill in the ranges in the Beilun district.

From the top hill, the highway goes to the nearest scenic spot of historical Yuhuang Temple.  Compared to 2 hours of steps walking, the highway downward walking was much more comfortable with bright daylight. It was not a loop walk as the highway goes to the another side of the hill.  I think I did a better job in taking photos and took rest well along the way. Luckily I found a bus station at the bottom of the highway.  The bus took me to the nearest stop to take a transfer bus to the metro station.  Better solution for back home.

I saw people walked the highway up the hill for excerices. In the middle way they drived up and parked the car and walk.  Cycling up was not easy…

Yellow bird in a cage was set up as a calling for other birds… it was not funny.

All the way it has beautiful views of trees and mountains with turning up way hanging Tibet Buddhism flags for alarm of danger driving.

Mountian daisies are great beautie.

The sign to the ancient Asoka Temple (Gu A Yuwang Shi) is 3 km way, which is similar to the distance of downhill forest trail walk.

A tea plantation at the front part of trail walking up the hill.

You shall see a willow fir tree just next to the trail.

787 bus goes directly from the bus stop close to the Zhonghe Metro to the Beilun Forest Botanic Garden.  I went even further to the Gongtong Village stop, where I had a village walk and had a lunch meal stop.  A egret was flying over to the creek at the front of  the village. Bamboo forest is the local vegetation.   Driver bamboo cooked with meat was delicious.

Mountain ginger was harvested by immigrant workers from the Guizhou province.

Taros are farmed in the village along the creek.
